PhD is not an easy major. You need to know a lot of things about the fields you are studying in and have skills that can be applied into other areas as well (i.e. programming, statistics) + general knowledge/skills (time management)etc will make your life easier. I am just glad I got it all done in time!
Here's what was needed for my PhD:
1. Thesis defense
2. Dissertation defense(final)
3. All coursework requirements satisfied by earning grades above C-
4. Two committee members from different school to sign off on thesis proposal paper; one must be chair or professor level so he has experience with writing dissertation proposals
5. Theses written up and approved after passing the first round of review; final copy submitted for printing
6. Dissertations completed and passed at least two rounds of reviews
